Phuket Marine Biological Center re-launches Green Fins-Thailand campaign

PHUKET: As a dive instructor involved in marine conservation, one common question I am asked is, ‘Why isn't there some programme or system in place which provides some direction and accountability on proper, sustainable reef use?’.

This question usually comes after witnessing instructors, guides, boat operators, or snorkeling tour operators behaving badly.

Most divers that ask that question are surprised to learn that just such a programme exists, and with some fairly big names attached. Unfortunately effective policy implementation can be as elusive as a Purple Painted Frogfish.

At present, participation is free but voluntary.

‘Green Fins’ is a United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), which was launched in Thailand in 2008. Its mission: ‘To protect and conserve coral reefs by establishing and implementing environmentally friendly guidelines to promote a sustainable diving and snorkeling tourism industry.’ The programme got off to a great start in 2008 with the launch of an innovative and informative English- and Thai-language website followed by outreach programmes to educate reef stakeholders.
